I Understand The Football Hatred Directed At Matt Millen …

I just do not get so many people in Detroit and so many fans of the Lions or individuals who cover the Lions showing this much hatred toward Matt Millen. Millen, of course, had a horrible tenure with the Lions as team president and was fired - finally - albeit way too late. But, Millen made an appearance recently on NBC to talk football and you would have thought by the violent reaction of some fans and some members of the media that NBC had given a platform to a terrorist or something. Look, Millen was terrible as a team executive and should never have been hired in the first place for that spot. However, Millen’s poor record as a team executive does not mean people should hate on his abilities as a commentator/analyst. Because, like it or not, Millen was actually pretty damn good at it. That is where he is best served and I think he will do a good job in that role. But, no amount of hate is going to erase the bitter memories of what Millen did during his tenure running the Lions, as a franchise, into the ground. Millen knows football, and his record as a football player and analyst prove it. Unfortunatley for Millen (although he made a lot of money off the Ford family) and fans of the Detroit Lions, his knowledge of footballwas lost in the translation from his work as a commentator and as a player to his work as a general manager and team president (drafting, hiring coaches, signing free agents, working with a salary cap, etc.). But, it’s obvious Matt Millen is gone from Detroit, but not soon forgotten.
