Kwame Kilpatrick is on his way out as mayor of the city of Detroit. One of the biggest disappointments has been the waste of what could have been for a young man who appeared to be on the fast track to a prominent position in the Democratic Party. As I pointed out to a friend, Kwame would have been speaking at this year's Democratic National Convention as one of the young, up-and-coming, black voices for our nation. This is a sentiment that was echoed in the Detroit Free Press online edition, from writer Bill McGraw, with this passage: "Had Kilpatrick's ethical compass been more finely calibrated over the past six years, he almost certainly would have enjoyed the limelight at the Democratic National Convention this summer along with such new-generation black mayors as Newark's Cory Booker and Philadelphia's Michael A. Nutter." Today, as Kilpatrick steps down ... we see the tragic end to what should have been a great start.
