Richard Lapchick, who has done great work calling out racism in college sports for a long time, is also troubled by the lack of black head coaches at the major Division I level. Wrote Lapchick: “You don’t really need a study to conclude that four African-American head coaches out of 119 Football Bowl Subdivision schools — in a sport in which 46 percent of the players are African-American — verges on scandalous. That’s the smallest number in 15 years.” These numbers alone are quite disturbing to a lot of people. But, the fact blacks are increasingly being paraded in front of the media as little more than token interviews by athletics directors trying not to look racist is yet another disturbing trend.
