This is the kind of stuff that really disappoints me, and hopefully a lot of other people. Detroit News columnist and ESPN contributor Rob Parker is taking heat for his out-of-line comment toward Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli. But, below is a comment off an AOL message board that makes me think that the worst of us all come out at the worst times.
Here is the message:

“I lived in the Detroit area for over 10 years and wondered why the News/Free Press would hire such a bigoted pc of crap like Parker, and then still keep him after laying off some very talented reporters. I cancelled my subscription last year after reading his racist rants and idiotic missives. Never fair. The paper will not repremand him, thats why they continue to lose readers. Marinelli may have done a poor job this year, but remember the talent that Millen gave him. BTW, I hear that Millen was hired as the Sports editor at the Detroit News…stay tuned for results of his closed door meeting with Wimp Parker……..”
So many times when black reporters or other minority reporters bring up important issues of race, people like the above writer become uncomfortable. People like “PATRICK” want to stick their head in the ground and hope that racism gets bored and walks away. People like “PATRICK” would see no problem with only four (I guess now five with Ron English apparently getting the Eastern Michigan job) black coaches out of 119 at the major-college level in football. Is it racist to bring up that this is somewhat disturbing? We have to not be so afraid to talk about racial issues if we are to make progress in our society. Newspapers are losing readers, but it has less to do with Rob Parker and more to do with the changing times. Lastly, bringing up race issues does not make one a racist.
