Personally, I find this whole development of Michael Steele being elected as chairman of the Republican National Committee to be more than a little suspect. But, maybe they (the Republicans) can ride the wave created by President Barack Obama toward becoming a more inclusive party. I doubt it. Anyway, here is a comment ThinkProgress found, from the mouth of the new RNC chairman, that intrigued me:
STEELE: And first off the government doesn’t create jobs. Let’s get this notion out of our heads that the government creates jobs. Not in the history of mankind has the government ever created a job. Small business owners do, small enterprises do. Not the government. When the government contract runs out, that job goes away. That’s what we’re talking about here and those 2 to 4 million jobs that are projected? Won’t happen, trust me.
So, if this is true, then does this mean that Steele was never really Lt. Governor of Maryland. Does that mean that all these cabinet positions are unpaid positions? President Bush created at least one new cabinet position during his administration. Does that mean that people who work in federal buildings all across the country are not really working … since the government does not create jobs? Is he talking about only the federal government or is he also talking about state and local governments? It really doesn’t matter. All governments create jobs. OK, I do kind of understand what Michael Steele is trying to say (even if it did come out kind of garbled). But, the government does have control of policy and regulations that can lead to job creation … job creation as maybe even Michael Steele would see it.
