I've written extensively about the Republican campaign to try and paint Sen. Barack Obama as somehow being a hater of the United States of America, unpatriotic and ungrateful (all typical attacks we've seen over the years). This is from New Mexico Rep. Heather Wilson, "Well, he has talked down about America. You know, we've always had this history of saying, 'Well, you know, politics ends at the water’s edge.' It didn't for Barack Obama. He’s been critical not only of the President but of American policy and hence has kind of a negative view of America in the world. That’s not unusual frankly among liberals in kind of post-Vietnam America, to say that America is the problem." First of all, as this Think Progress article points out, disagreeing with President George W. Bush does not equate to being unpatriotic. That is ridiculous. Criticizing policy is not unpatriotic. This is a familiar Republican attack pattern that reveals itself over and over again. Rep. Wilson's logic is that Criticism of American Policy + criticism of the president = "a negative view of America in the world." That is a bunch of garbage and yet another sign of GOP desperation as man Republicans can hardly believe there is a possibility they could lose to this man.
