It was only a matter of time before the desperate Republicans resorted to resurrecting the old-news story of Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin, in an interview with the highly-conservative and partisan Bill Kristol, could not resist once again bringing up the issue of Wright. As has been discussed before, the Republicans are desperate knowing that the souring economy is nothing but bad news for the GOP. Thus, we've seen an increased emphasis on smear ads that have pushed the racial envelope and attempted to paint Sen. Barack Obama as an extremist who is "risky" and "dangerous" and who "is not one of us." These are all code for reminding people of Sen. Obama's ethnicity. As a result, should we really be surprised that the right wing has become gravediggers to bring back to life the tired controversy of Rev. Wright. This time, it's Gov. Palin again called upon to do the dirty work so Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, can stand back and act like he is above such pitiful political attacks. Again, as I've said before, the Republicans are using Palin (who they believe is inoculated against attacks because of the ability to counterattack that she is being assailed because she is a woman) conservative ministers of propaganda like Kristol, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Fox News to get out their talking points. Here is what Gov. Palin said to Kristol (posing as a columnist for the New York Times, but who is about as objective as Rush Limbaugh), "I don't know why that association isn't discussed more," Palin said, "because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country, and to have sat in the pews for 20 years and listened to that - with, I don't know, a sense of condoning it, I guess, because he didn't get up and leave - to me, that does say something about character. I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up." Considering Gov. Palin's preacher, she might want to steer clear of associations with religious figures. This is further evidence of the obsession to win and the win at all costs mentality of the Republican Party. Good Americans can only hope that this Scorched Earth strategic route to the White House fails.
