Media Matters Addresses Double Standard That Ignores McCain-Liddy Relationship While Attacking Sen. Barack Obama’s Association With Ayers

The hard-working people at Media Matters have once again done a find job of exposing a doublen standard in the media in regard to associations. The Republicans have decided to dive head first into the cesspool of guilt-by-association politics. As part of that, every person that Sen. Barack Obama has stood in line at the grocery store with can be linked to him by the G.O.P. Apparently, however, the standard does not apply to Sen. McCain who is being given most a free pass for his associations with Charles Keating, Rod Parsley, John Hagee and, yes, domestic terrorist G. Gordon Liddy. Right wingers like Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and everyone else at Fox News (excepting perhaps Alan Colmes) make every excuse in the world for Sen. McCain’s associations while working tirelessly to link Sen. Obama to anyone and everyone with even a hint of scandal related to their name. Here is a passage from a Media Matters story regarding this issue, “The lack of media attention to the Liddy-McCain relationship is one of the clearest double standardsin recent political history. McCain and the news media have devoted an extraordinary amount of attention to Barack Obama’s ties to Bill Ayers, yet until last night, McCain hadn’t been asked a single question* about his ties to Liddy, a convicted felon who has instructed his listeners on how best to shoot law-enforcement agents. Liddy has held a fundraiser for McCain at his home and describes the Arizona senator as an ‘old friend’; McCain has said he is ‘proud’of Liddy.” The silence from the right wing is deafening.
